Silver Tuba Displayed

Linda Burchette

David and Cheri Sprinkle of Johnson City, Tenn., recently shared a musical piece of the past with the Holston River Heritage Center, a museum of the Smyth County Historical Society, in Marion. A silver tuba belonging to David’s grandfather, Robert S. Sprinkle of Marion, and photos of him with bands from the early 1900s were on display at the museum. David’s father, Lewis Sprinkle, owned and operated Marion Transit Corp. with Robert Anderson. The tuba had been passed down to Lewis and then to David. While it was on display, several people in the community shared other photos of the local bands. The Sprinkle’s hope to bring the tuba and photos back for a future exhibit on the community’s musical heritage.
